Our Dog Oscar

Our dog Oscar was the who we credit for getting us into our first house. At the time, we had exactly $25 dollars in our checking account. While waiting for a friend to come home, we made the mistake of visiting a local pet shop. There sat Oscar. He was about 8 weeks old and the price said $50. She mentioned to the clerk how cute she thought Oscar was and he says 'Well, why don't you buy him? He's the cheapest we have.' We told him about our budget and he said 'Well, since he's a mixed breed, it may be pretty hard to sell him any time soon so, give me what you have and I'll throw in a bag of dog food with the deal.' We spent our last $25 bucks on that little guy. The first thing he did after purchase was wiggle out of my hands and take off down the crowded mall hallway. I thought 'Great!... we'll never see him again!' but, sure enough, he 'high-tailed' it back and jumped right into my arms. We had a problem though. We lived in an apartment that didn't allow pets! (Yeah, I know) We already had a cat named Felix (Oscar and Felix were truly the Odd Couple). We were nuts but brought him home anyway. He grew quickly but, amazingly, never barked, not even once. Regardless of that fact, a neighbor complained to management. They said 'Dump the dog or find a new place to live'.... Well, we chose to find a new place to live. That dog turned out to be the smartest dog I've ever had (and I've had quite a few!). We used to say he was so smart, he could play card tricks. The last day in our apartment, during the move, he barked for the first time. He scared himself with that strange sound coming out of his mouth. We laughed about that for years.
